Introduction

I am a hairdresser based in Canada and as such, I have a lot of experience with various companies that offer hair products. These companies are based in both Canada and elsewhere.

Although in my line of work, I have used almost all the different hair products available at various hair companies both online and in physical stores, I am particularly partial towards hair extensions. I have used them myself and have also installed them on several clients’ heads.

A little while ago, I had a customer who wanted me to install hair extensions for her. My customer wanted tape ins and she can afford them, so let’s go for it.

My customers trust me to purchase the extension for them as I have more experience with this and it saves them the hassle.

So, I wanted to buy hair extensions, but instead of going for the hair companies I usually purchase from, I wanted to try out a new company. Preferably one that was based in Canada, as the international ones are really not good for the budget because of duty fees and high shipping fees.

A quick search on Google for hair extension companies in Canada introduced me to Bombay Hair. I went on to their website and everything looked quite promising.

So, I decided why not try them out this time? And that’s precisely what I did. Read on to find out more about my experience with Bombay Hair.

Please keep in mind that this review is about my general experience shopping hair extensions from Bombay Hair.

A Bit About the Company Bombay Hair

Bombay Hair, as the name suggests, is a hair product company that specializes in hair extensions. They have a strong presence on social media platforms. They actively respond to queries or feedback from their followers.

Bombay Hair offers many different hair products, but hair extensions are definitely their main highlights. They have clip in hair extensions, as well as tape in, keratin tip, I- tip, and weave hair extensions. Apart from this they also offer hair styling products such as hair straighteners, curling irons, and hair accessories.

Another thing I liked about Bombay Hair is that they ship internationally. Of course, this may come with duty tax and longer shipping times, but it is still a good option for those who don’t have a good local hair extension company.

One thing that I really appreciate with Bombay Hair is that they have a shipping facility in Canada. So in short, it’s fine that they advertise their business in Canada if they actually ship from Canada. Too many hair extensions retailers will advertise heavily in Canada and not clearly inform you that you will have to pay duty tax because they ship from elsewhere.

I was slapped with a whopping 50% duty tax on Glam Seamless and 20% duty tax with Luxy Hair. Even worse, I was misled by Clip Hair Canada. As you’d imagine, with a name like Clip Hair Canada, the fair assumption is that it’s a Canadian company. But it isn’t. It was a UK company shipping from the UK… and they are pretending to be Canadian.

Therefore, the fact that Bombay Hair ships from Canada & advertise to Canadians is totally fine. My experience began positively since they advertise to countries where they physically operate.

Bombay Hair Online Reviews

Before I buy hair extensions from their website, I wanted to see what others had to say about the company. Well, I found quite a few reviews both on various blogs and also on several YouTube channels. Most of  these were positive reviews. And the reviews on their website were mostly positive as well.

However, I noticed a very disappointing thing from Bombay Hair. They have their employees do fake customer testimonial videos.

I was very surprised to see a Bombay Hair’s employee do a video “review” of the product. That video is posted by “Missy Chrissy”. I noticed one of her comments in a different video where she’s giving her Bombay Hair email address to someone.

But this “Miss Chrissy”, who made very clear in the comment section of a different video that she’s an employee of Bombay Hair, actually posted a video review where she reviews Bombay Hair… and she isn’t saying that she’s a Bombay Hair employee in the video. Instead, she pretends the video is honest and not sponsored. This isn’t true, she’s a Bombay Hair employee… so I can’t believe that this “review” is honest. Not to mention the video description gives you exclusive discounts to encourage you from buying from Bombay Hair. Not only is this dishonest from Bombay Hair, but it may actually be illegal.

When you look at her YouTube channel, you will see she did a video “reviewing” Bombay Hair. In that video, she pretends to be a satisfied customer.

I’m not the only one who noticed this.

If I knew about this, I wouldn’t have purchased from this company. But it was too late.

Another thing I found a bit strange is that the company has lot of positive reviews on their website, but their BBB page has many bad reviews.

Their BBB pages had a few complaints that went unanswered.

Website

As for the website, the company has a really nice website. It’s really easy to use and it has plenty of beautiful pictures. The pictures immediately catch your eye and attract you. I found the website to be quite secure. They had all the necessary SSL certificates , so you can shop with the confidence that your information will be safe.

Apart from this, all the products and other information are neatly sorted into sections so that you can easily find what you are looking for. There are plenty of high quality images of the products, but the only drawback was that the product descriptions provided weren’t as detailed as I would have liked them to be. All online stores, not just hair companies, I feel should really pay a lot of attention to this aspect.

When a customer is purchasing anything without actually seeing the product physically, they should at least be given all the information so that they can make a decision about purchasing with confidence.

Product Range and Pricing

This hair company offers different types of hair extensions on their website. These include the usual clip in hair extensions, which are usually a best-seller on every hair extension website and are a personal favorite for me too.

Apart from this, they also offer hair extensions that you need to get installed by a certified hairdresser i.e. the semi-permanent hair extensions. In this category, there was tape in extensions, keratin tip extensions, I-tip extensions, and weave in extensions.

As far as the prices are concerned, I found them to be average.

They are not too expensive to the point where you can’t afford them, such as Glam Seamless and Bellami Hair. But they are also not too cheap to the point you’re skeptical such as eBay and Alixpress (chinese retailers).

The prices were more or less consistent with some other hair companies I had checked out but were significantly cheaper than the more mainstream or popular hair brands.

For example, the price for clip in extensions, 18 inches long and 125 grams in weight, was USD 130. There are some websites though that offer even cheaper prices. I couldn’t really be sure about the quality they would be in. With this price range, I had a degree of confidence that a standard of quality will be maintained.

This brings me to my next point. Bombay Hair made the claim that they use purely virgin hair in their hair extensions. Virgin hair means that the hair used while making the hair extensions have not been chemically treated in any way.

I find that hard to believe considering that the company had all sorts of colors available in hair extensions on their website.

These included rare shades like auburn or ombre. I don’t see how these shades could be obtained using virgin hair. As far as I know, no one has naturally ombre hair. To get that shade, the hair would have required chemical dyes at the very least. So, after that, they would no longer be virgin hair.

In short, Bombay Hair are not made with virgin hair as advertised on their website. Despite their product description claiming that their extensions are made of virgin hair, this is untrue. I mean let’s be honest, have you ever seen someone with naturally ombre hair? What about purple hair? Of course you haven’t, because it’s impossible. So selling extensions in these colors and pretend that they are “virgin” is a false statement. Do you want to read more about my thoughts on the quality of the hair extensions offered by Bombay Hair? My Purchases

I purchased tape-in hair extensions from Bombay Hair because that is what I was looking for at the moment.

My customer had already specified the shade she wanted, but I had to decide just how many to get. I was looking for blonde tape in extensions. Finding them was easy, but the weight was another issue. In general, one set of hair extensions usually weighs somewhere around 40 grams to 50 grams. At least, this has been my experience with most hair extension retailers. And 1 set of tape in extensions is never enough for a full head.

On the website, you can easily find the product you need by using the search bar if you know the name of the product you are looking for. If you don’t have that then you can easily use the filters available to narrow down your search by putting in your requirements and then finding the right product for yourself from the search results. This can help narrow down the search and make it easier for everyone to find the product they need without having to go through all the products. That would be really hard since Bombay Hair has a very extensive product range on their website.

As a reminder, I purchased the extensions with my own money. I don’t believe at all in any sponsored reviews. I’m saying this because I believe Bombay Hair is sponsoring a lot of positive blog reviews and YouTube reviews. In order for a review to be legitimate, it must be reviewed by somebody who has purchased the extensions with their own money and therefore will not have any financial gain in exchange for reviewing the product or the company. This way they can give their unbiased opinion.

The buying and payment procedures were pretty much standard. Just add the products to your cart, add your personal information, and checkout. For payment, they have the usual options i.e. pay by card or through PayPal.

I received my order very late. It was delivered by UPS and it took 9 days. They ship from Richmond, BC. I don’t know why shipping was that long. But hey, at least they ship from Canada as advertised! Because sometimes, you get nasty surprises when buying online, just like when I bought from Clip Hair Canada.

Regardless, once I got the extensions, I must say that Bombay Hair has the best package I have ever seen from a hair extension company and that’s saying a lot considering how many packages I have received from different hair companies.

As you can see in the picture, it’s a cute, small pink box made with a good quality material. The brand name mentioned on the hair extensions’ box was the same as the name of the company i.e. Bombay Hair. The hair extensions inside were neatly coiled to keep them from getting tangled up.

The hair extensions were of a satisfactory quality as well. In short, I had a somewhat satisfactory experience with Bombay Hair and if you wish to read more about my in-depth review of the actual hair extensions click here.

Shipping

Now, as far as the shipping is concerned, it took 9 days in my case to get my order from Bombay Hair. This is considerably longer than what I’m used to from other companies. Especially considering that I am based in Canada and Bombay Hair also ships from Canada (Richmond, BC).

I find 9 days to be extremely long for shipping within the country. I usually receive my orders from other hair companies within 3 to 4 days. Add to this the fact that there were shipping fees too, makes matters worse. It’s not as if shipping was free or else the long wait might have been a small compromise to make.

The parcel was delivered by UPS. This is the default shipping provider for Bombay Hair, I assume, because there was no option on the website to choose the courier service. While I have nothing against UPS, I still feel that customers should have the choice to choose the courier service they prefer. Or at least opt for a courier service that doesn’t take this long to deliver orders. 9 days is just too much! I have experienced some companies that deliver packages in literally just one or two days even. Honestly, UPS is always kind of a gamble here in Canada. You may get your order in 1 day, or it may take 10 days. You never know!

Canada Post is the best in Canada, even if their employees go on strike every couple of years!

In short, yes you will get the order you paid for. Bombay Hair isn’t a scam that will keep your money and not ship you anything. You may be surprised that this still exist right? Well, it does! I was literally scammed by Hair Extension Sale. And by literally, I mean LITERALLY. Yep! You read this right, hair extension sale took my money and didn’t ship anything! I had to open a PayPal case. Anyway, for the moment being, let’s keep talking about Bombay Hair.

Return Policy

Bombay Hair does have a return policy which is pretty much standard. Nothing exceptional or overly generous like some other hair companies I have seen.

They have different policies for different products, but as far as hair extensions are concerned, the return period is 14 days from receiving the order and the products must be returned in the same condition as they were received in. In other words, the package must be unopened, and the hair extensions shouldn’t be used or modified in any way.

The company will refund your money using the same mode of payment as the one you opted for while making the purchase.

But they don’t-refund the shipping charges, so if you aren’t happy with what you received, you will lose out on the shipping fees at the very least. That’s why I love Canada Hair, because all shipping fees are paid by them even if you return your order. In the case of international shipping, the company will not refund the duty fees either. If you want to get the products you bought returned, then all you need to do is get in touch with the company through email and request a refund.

Customer Support

Good customer support, I feel, is one of the biggest factors in building trust between customers and companies, especially for online stores.

In this regard, Bombay Hair’s performance was horrible. Although the company offers phone support (which is something rare in e-commerces), they blatantly ignored me when I complained about the tape ins not being sticky enough. I sent an email complaining that the tape ins they sent me didn’t stick well at all, and I did receive an automatic reply from Bombay Hair confirming that they received my email. They never replied to me. As of writing this article, it’s now been over a month. So it’s safe to say that the company simply decided to ignore me because they don’t want to answer customers’ complaints.

Perhaps I could have called them or sent a message via Facebook, taking into account they seem to be quite active on social media. Regardless, I already found a solution to the tape ins not sticking well so I didn’t bother contacting them. Also, I shouldn’t be harassing a company to get customer support.

Honestly, I find this to be very unfortunate, since it seems that ignoring customers is a pattern in this company. Here are examples:

I’d like to re-emphasis how important a phone number is. Many online companies don’t offer phone support, such as Canada Hair and Luxy Hair. But Bombay Hair does, and this is amazing. But since they ignored me when I complained about the extensions I received, I’ll have to give them 1-star for customer service.

Final Verdict

The tape in extensions  I got were really average. The adhesive tapes didn’t stick well. There were also some problems with the overall hair quality.

I have talked about that in detail in the review for Bombay Hair tape in hair extensions. However, despite that, the company performed in a somewhat satisfactory way in my opinion (despite ignoring me when I complained about the adhesiveness of the tape ins I received).

There are quite a few good things about Bombay Hair.

As far as the hair quality is concerned, that was satisfactory but probably not the best. In the price department, they are average but considering that they ship locally, and you can save on duty, it makes them an attractive option.

Other positive aspects of Bombay Hair is that they ship internationally and provide phone support.

But it is important to keep in mind that there are also a few negative points about Bombay Hair extensions before you make a final decision about purchasing their hair extensions.

The drawbacks include the fact that the hair used in the hair extensions tend to become dry after being exposed to heat. This is unavoidable if you want to use any hair styling tools on the hair extensions. As reviewed by other customers on Bombay Hair’s BBB page, the extensions become dry after being exposed to heat.

The other drawback is their questionable product description in terms of hair quality. They claim that their extensions are made of virgin hair, and that is untrue.

Along with this, the hair was also shedding a lot more than what I have normally experienced with hair extensions.

So, basically, I had a somewhat satisfactory experience with Bombay Hair, but I wouldn’t buy from them again. Bombay Hair extensions are okay, but definitely not the best.
