Introduction
Hello to all of the hair enthusiasts out there! Before starting with this review, I want to introduce myself to all of you reading this review. I’m a Canada-based hairdresser who’s also certified in installing hair extensions.
Over the years as a hair extensions’ technician and enthusiast, I’ve dealt with countless brands and I’ve tried and tested them in search of the best and most affordable hair extensions for my clients!
I’m very passionate about hair extensions and writing reviews about hair extensions because I believe that’s the only way I can help people find and encourage high-quality hair extensions!
I fell in love with hair extensions after I started experimenting with them and then went on to get professionally trained in installing them. Hair extensions give an overnight solution to hair problems and I love how diverse they are. You can try out so many hairstyles using hair extensions! The sky is the limit when it comes to hair extensions because you can try different types of hairstyles and hair colors with them.
If you get high-quality hair extensions, the difference between your natural hair and the hair extensions will barely be visible, giving your hair a flawless and completely natural look! I love how versatile hair extensions can get and how easy it is to experiment with them!
I would like to add that all of the reviews I post on this website are 100% real and genuine. None of them are influenced by any benefits from any hair extension brands!
Today’s Review: Sally Beauty
Today’s review is about one of my favorite beauty stores out there! Yes, it is Sally Beauty! For those of you who have been reading my reviews on hair extensions, you probably already know how much I love Sally Beauty. For those of you who don’t, Sally Beauty is one of the best stores out there for hairdressers like me.
The thing I love and admire the most about Sally Beauty is that everyone is welcome in the store! There are many hair enthusiasts out there that are not hairdressers, but love experimenting with their hair. However, they often have difficulty in finding products because there are certain stores and brands that sell their products only to hairdressers and other professionals. The store is for everyone who loves experimenting with their hair! At Sally Beauty, only one thing matters your passion for beauty and aesthetics!
Sally Beauty sells a wide range of hair care products ranging from some of the most affordable and highest quality hair dyes to hair extensions and even hair masks!
Without a doubt, Sally Beauty is my go-to store for inexpensive haircare items that I need for my clients as a hairdresser.
I was thinking about going to Sally Beauty to get a few products for my clients, and then it hit me that I hadn’t tried their hair extensions yet, which was very weird because I’m in love with hair extensions since a very long time and I also love Sally Beauty!
That is when I decided that I needed to try Sally Beauty’s hair extensions as well. I paid a visit to my local store to purchase these hair extensions.
Shopping at Sally Beauty
After I entered the store and went to their hair extensions’ section, I found out that the hair extensions available there were all of the different brands! None of the hair extensions were made by Sally Beauty themselves, but all of them were of different companies and brands. There were so many brands whose names I had not ever heard of that it got super-confusing and I couldn’t decide which ones to get!
All of the brands contained different types of hair extensions, including clip-in hair extensions, tape-in hair extensions, some hair toppers, as well as hair pieces.
Since I was not familiar with all of the brands available at Sally Beauty, I can only remember the name of a few. These include Barely Xtensions, Design Lengths, Hairtensity, Revlon, Satin Strands, The Sassy Collection, and many more. I was pretty confused about which one to get because all of the brands had such creative names that I was impressed!
I was hoping that the brands had also put as much effort into making their hair extensions as they did in coming up with brand names for themselves.
If you want more details about my general shopping experience at Sally Beauty, then please check out my other article about Sally Beauty that contains a general review. This one is more focused on the quality of hair extensions, so if you are interested in the quality of hair extensions, keep reading to find out more!
Choosing the right product
Choosing the right product was pretty hard for me because none of the brands there were popular. Therefore, I could not find any information regarding any of the brands and the staff there wasn’t that helpful either.
In the end, I decided to go with Satin Strands because their tape-in hair extensions looked similar to the tape-in hair extensions I had bought from Glam Seamless earlier. You can also read my review on Glam Seamless tape-in hair extensions!
Variety of Colors
The variety of colors available were pretty limited, which was a mood-buster for me. Therefore, if you are looking for funky fashion shades, you’ll have to look at some other brand.
However, lucky for me, they had the color I was looking for. I wanted a brown color, which is a very typical color, hence, it was available. Other non-typical colors were not available!
I was very disappointed with the variety of colors, considering that the store has been around for 1964. Furthermore, they have multiple stores all over the world and you would expect such a big store to have more than just a few colors.
They only had three shades at the local store I went to. Initially, I thought that the rest of the colors might have run out. However, I checked their online store as well after getting home, but only three shades were available online too. The picture below shows the colors of Satin Strands’ hair extensions available.
Other Online Reviews
As you can see from the picture above, the hair extensions have an average rating of 3.5 out of 5, which is okay.
Apart from the ratings, there are many negative reviews about the tape-in hair extensions as well. Most of the people were complaining about the hair extensions falling off. This is a very common complaint when it comes to tape-in hair extensions.
Unlike clip-in hair extensions, tape-in hair extensions have adhesives which can fall out easily if the adhesives are not strong enough.
On the other hand, there are many positive reviews about Satin Strands on the website as well. Most of the reviews are in the extremes. People either really like the hair extensions or really hate them.
The Installation Process
Tape-in hair extensions require expertise in installing and therefore, these types of hair extensions should only be handled by hairdressers who are certified professionals in installing hair extensions. Not all hairdressers know how to install hair extensions, so you need to be very careful in choosing the right hairdresser.
Before booking an appointment with your hairdresser, make sure that they have a lot of experience when dealing with hair extensions and have been given professional training regarding it.
Unfortunately, I have witnessed that many hairdressers do not install tape-in hair extensions correctly. Let me give you an example.
Whenever you are installing tape-in hair extensions, you should install them on hair that has been recently washed and dried. This is because if your hair strands contain oil and haven’t been cleaned recently, the tapes of the tape-in hair extensions will not stick properly and will slide away, a common problem faced by many people who wear tape-in hair extensions.
However, I have seen many hairdressers install tape-in hair extensions on hair that haven’t been washed two days prior to the appointment, one of whom was my (former) boss.
It was disappointing to see such an act is done by a professional hairdresser. This is why I always recommend in my reviews that you get your tape-in hair extensions installed by a professional who is specifically certified in installing hair extensions and isn’t just a hairdresser.
Since I am experienced and have professional training in installing hair extensions, I did not have any problem in installing them. Unlike the negative reviews, the tape-in hair extensions were pretty easy to install.
Before installing the hair extensions, I washed my hair with a clarifying shampoo to remove the accumulated dirt and oil from my hair. This makes the tape-in extensions stick better. I did not apply any sort of conditioner or hydrating gel or cream after the cleansing process because doing so weakens the bond between the adhesives of the tape-in extensions and your hair. I let my hair dry and then proceeded to install the tape-in hair extensions. I used a hot flat iron to make the installation easier.
The hot iron melted the glue onto my hair and made sure that my hair stuck to the tape-in hair extensions well. It made sure that the bond between my natural hair and the tape-in hair extensions was firm.
My purpose behind telling all of this is not to encourage you to apply for the tape-in hair extensions yourself. You should always go to a certified professional who has a lot of experience in dealing with hair extensions. After all, what is the point of saving a few bucks with the risk of ruining your hair’s appearance after you have purchased such expensive hair extensions? Do not compromise on that because the installation process greatly determines the outlook of tape-in hair extensions!
However, you should know what the professional procedure looks like so that when you got a hairdresser to get them installed, you will know you’re in good hands if the hairdresser follows this procedure.
I waited for about 3 days before washing my hair. When I washed my hair after that, I did not lose any hair wefts. I was surprised because I had pretty bad experiences when dealing with hair extensions earlier. For example, when I used Bombay tape-in hair extensions and Glam Seamless’ tape-in hair extensions, some of the hair wefts fell off when I washed my hair for the first time, even though I used the proper procedure while installing the hair extensions, which was very disappointing.
Quality of the Hair Extensions
Each set of tape-in hair extensions contains 20 wefts, which is the standard in the market. However, one set, or 20 wefts, are not enough for a full-head coverage. Usually, it takes about 3-5 sets to cover your entire head, depending on the size of your head and the volume of your natural hair.
However, I decided to use only one set, that is, 20 wefts, because my purpose was solely to test the hair quality!
Tape Quality
When it comes to tape-in hair extensions, the quality of the tapes matters a lot because, at the end of the day, the adhesives on the tapes determine how firmly the tapes will hold to your hair and how long they will last on your hair.
You can also tell a lot about the quality of the tapes just by looking at them. The adhesive tapes were in perfect condition, unlike the tapes that I got from Glam Seamless. The tapes of the tape-in hair extensions from Glam Seamless were completely crooked and the glue was also exposed, which made the glue dry out and the tapes became ineffective. You can check out my review of the Glam Seamless tape-in hair extensions too. It is available on this website.
Another problem that you might face when wearing tape-in hair extensions is that the tape can pull your hair and make it feel heavy and weighed down. This might make your experience uncomfortable and may even result in headaches if the pain is too great.
However, with Satin Strands’ tape-in hair extensions, I experienced no such problems. The tapes were very comfortable to wear and did not weigh my hair down.
Hair Quality
Of course, the hair quality plays a big role in determining the final outlook of your hair when it comes to hair extensions. If the hair quality is high, the hair will look soft and shiny, just like natural hair. The hair quality is very important when purchasing hair extensions because it has the power to make your hair look natural or fake.
High-quality hair extensions never look fake and it is hard to differentiate your real hair from the hair extensions in such cases. The hair quality of Satin Strands’ tape-in hair extensions was pretty great, considering the price of the extensions.
The true test of the hair quality stands when the hair is treated with heat. Low-quality hair, when treated with heat, will eventually melt and does not respond well to heat. However, high-quality real human hair can handle heat pretty well and does not melt when exposed to heat.
To truly determine the hair quality, you need to test the hair extensions with heat, which is exactly what I did. I used heat on them occasionally and they didn’t burn.
However, I did smell something funny whenever I applied heat to them, but I don’t think it was that big of a deal.
It’s important that your hair extensions are able to withstand heat because heating is required for styling hair. There’s no point of having hair extensions installed when they can’t handle the heat because then they cannot be styled!
Furthermore, I wash my hair twice a week with high-end, good-quality products. The hair of the extensions still stayed soft and smooth for a few weeks!
A Few Weeks Down the Road
I had to eventually remove the tape-in hair extensions after nine weeks. This is because my hair grew pretty quickly so the extensions weren’t close to my roots anymore and had to be removed.
In these nine weeks, I only lost about 4 wefts of the tape-in hair extensions! Four wefts are pretty less, so that was a great experience for me. It’s very common for a lot of wefts to fall out, especially after 7-8 weeks, but four wefts are less, which means that the tapes were of high quality and held on pretty firmly to the hair.
However, despite holding on firmly to the hair, the tapes did not damage my natural hair. Again, it’s pretty common for tape-in hair extensions to damage your hair, especially during the removal of the hair extensions. It was great to find out that the tapes did not damage my natural hair!
I would normally re-install the hair extensions and adjust them after the length of my hair would change. However, in this case, the hair extensions started to get tangled 7 weeks after I installed them. Therefore, after I removed them, the extensions were too tangled to be used again!
This was the only problem I faced while using these hair extensions. The hair extensions also started to seem a bit damaged because of the tangles, so, I decided to abandon them!
Affordability
I purchased brown hair extensions of the length 18 inches. The hair extensions were priced at $127.56 excluding taxes.
In my opinion, these hair extensions are pretty reasonable! I’ve had a very bad experience with other companies’ tape-in hair extensions, which cost more but were pathetic when it came to the hair quality.
The hair quality of these tape-in hair extensions by Satin Strands was great, and the price was also pretty reasonable considering the high hair quality.
Comparison with Other Brands
Throughout this review, I’ve compared Satin Strands’ hair extensions to those of other brands by listing the problems I faced with the other brands. However, let me give you a general ranking of Satin Strands in my experience.
So, Satin Strands definitely exceed many other hair extensions brands such as Glam Seamless & Bombay Hair, in both affordability and hair quality.
Conclusion
To conclude, I had a great experience using these hair extensions from Satin Strands. However, due to the lack of colors, I don’t think I’ll be able to use them regularly! Apart from the lack of colors, the only thing that bothered me was that the hair extensions tangled easily.
Other than that, everything else about the hair extensions was pretty great! The hair quality was good and the quality of the tapes was also pretty nice. The hair did not melt on heating and responded well to styling tools. Moreover, only about four wefts fell out by the time I removed the hair extensions!
I’d recommend using Satin Strands’ tape-in hair extensions!

My only complaint so far is I’ve had 2 sets fall out in a day. The tape is not very strong. Color is great and the hair is so soft!

I just purchased 3 packs of the Satin Strands tape in extensions at Sally’s. The woman at Sally’s was very knowledgeable and did a great job matching the extensions to my natural color. They were super easy to put in. My 12-year-old granddaughter put them in for me and they are all super tight. None have fallen out. They look and feel very natural.
My hair salon wanted $1800 to do exactly what I did for myself. My total cost was $300 for the hair and I gave my granddaughter $20. She was thrilled!
The hair quality is exceptional. I could not be more pleased with the results.

I have been wearing extensions off and on for over 15 yrs due to health condition hair loss.
I purchased extensions from glam seamless BUT I DO NOT buy tape from glam seamless anymore.
I buy Sally’s brand hair extension tape, seriously better!!!!. I’ve also used walkers tape ,again with flat iron technique.
TIP !!! After installing hair touch tape section of hair with flat iron for like 2-3 seconds and I promise your extensions will stay in place. If your extensions are not human hair then be careful with flatiron on hair, apply just a second.

Have been using these for over five years, the last 3-4 packs I’ve bought the tape must have been bad, I had to retake due to the original tape not sticking! Now struggling to get 4 more packs due to my color apparently out of stock EVERY WHERE! Might have to switch lines! Sally’s employee told me they will no longer Carry anything/ hair due to only focusing on color! As a profound, I’m a little nervous about that, but hopefully the employees will get education. Sorry to have to leave your store and find somewhere else!!!

This was my first time with extensions. I bought them from Sally’s and had my hair dresser put them in. They are pricey but I’m glad I bought them because they look so natural and have stayed in beautifully. Washed them curled them dyed them and they are still in great shape over 3 months. I just wish they had shorter me lengths available. I have to waste hair. I need 14“ extensions but can only find 18” or 20” in same brand Satin Strands.
